Hurricane Shmuricane

With Sandy wreaking havoc on the East Coast, we are stuck here in Europe (i know, poor us). Getting a flight out of Paris was not going to be able to happen until Friday, so we decided to pack up and head to Amsterdam to catch a flight that leaves on Wednesday. Long journey! But Amsterdam is a city that i absolutely love so things could definitely be worse! Can't wait to hit up the Negen Straatjes.

Here i am at Paris' Gare du Nord to grab the train yesterday and below is a pic of my old Paris roommates and i in Amsterdam back in December 2009. Good times, good memories!

Alexa's sartorial sensibilities may not be for everyone but i certainly appreciate her consistent aesthetic and her sticking to her style instincts by always seemingly thinking outside the box. Recently, she's caught my eye more than once (thrice, to be precise) and i just had to peanut gallery it.

In order of appearance:
1. In Lover
2. In Chanel
3. In Versus

Over the knee boots. Love them. I've had a pair for a few years and i'm kind of in the mood to bust them out, obliging to the weather, naturally. I love how both of these ladies (Camille and Annemiek, respectively) have interpreted theirs: one going the ladylike route and one with a sporty slant; both, however, very cool.

Inspired & Desired

I know i'm starting to become a little redundant... but here i go again: i'm incredibly inspired by the beautiful streets of Paris, along with its striking denizens. So to properly illustrate that, i've chosen a few images that reflect how i'm feeling inside. Effortless, simple, pretty and seasonally appropriate.

Shades of Blue

This color's been having a moment since last summer's cobalt revival and it continues to feel incredibly fresh.

Another Day

This was a perfect look to walk the streets of the City of Lights for the following reasons: it's incredibly comfortable, it's kind of chic but still casual, and the neutral colors are evocative of the great french aesthetic. Am i being nerdy with this analysis? Perhaps.

Top - Bella Dahl
Denim - J Brand
Jacket - Helmut Lang
Bag - Bottega Veneta
Sneakers - Topshop

October Day

Been trying my best to document what i've been wearing in Paris. We have been blessed with unusually warm weather these past few days so that those jackets i brought have so far been only useful to bare the blame of my overweight - thus extra-fee'd - luggage. I'm sure that they will eventually come in handy, but for now, gallivanting about in a simple sweater or long sleeve has been more than sufficient to keep comfortable.

Sweater - Topshop
Denim - AG Jeans
Sneakers - Topshop
Bag - Zara

Being in Paris, as you can imagine, is incredibly inspiring. It's a well-documented fact that women here have a certain je ne sais quoi and sitting on a terrace, watching crowds of them walk by, i was reminded of just how naturally chic and beautiful French girls are. Their sensibilities could be summed up as the opposite of ostentation. Instead of striving for perfection, they simply play up what they've got. Like i said - it's inspiring.

Bisous de Paris!

Bonjour! As you are reading this my chéris, i am struggling to stay awake as i have just landed in the French Capital. I am so excited to be here for many reasons:

1. I haven't been here in nearly 3 years. Last time i actually lived there.
2. The hubs and i have not taken a honeymoon yet, so this will be a great pre-game. Romance!
3. Get inspired to write my little heart out.
4. Stuff my face full of douceurs - here's looking at you, pistachio macaron. Wink!
5. Do some quality shopping.
6. Take in the most beautiful light in the early evenings as the sun hits the buildings. Seriously, i've ever only seen this in Paris. Just have a look for yourself.

I will try to blog while here but definitely expect a slowdown. Have a great weekend!!

Pink & Purple

Sometimes i like to surprise myself and throw in a big bold bright color into the mix. I love the way these two have done it: first Caroline and her ladylike take on neon and second, one of my favorites, Anabela, who went the chic chunky knit route but gone urban.

Smells Like Dries Spirit

As a Canadian, i strongly feel that i am just genetically predispositioned to have a strong affinity for plaid and heavy layering. So naturally, the ss13 Dries Van Noten show strongly resonated with me. The grunge influences - it seems Mr. Van Noten was struck by the Cobain stick in a major way - were blended with an ideal balance of femininity and utter nostalgia. One of Spring 13's standouts in my books.

Fall Stuff & Such

I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't love fall. What's not to like?? A fresh wind of change, the crisp-smelling air, beautiful nature transitioning into all kinds of rich colors, fashion becoming rich and cozy. You know the drill. Some highlights of my autumn, so far.

1. Hanging out on the back porch at sunset.
2. Drinking an extra large comforting brew at the German biergarten, decked in stripes and plaid.
3. The beautiful fall sky at dusk.
4. Pumpkins in a bin at the corner bodega.
5. The best thing EVER: full-on space overhaul thanks to California Closets.

Uuuuh - can you say striking?!? And completely arrestingly, mesmerizingly beautiful?! 1000 times yes. I can't even express the extent to which i adore and anticipate seeing what all the fashion creatives will have up their sleeves in terms of interpreting all the season's new trends through beautiful imagery. This is a prime example of why i get so excited -- i'm dying over this story.

Put A Lid On It

I was so eager to see what Hedi Slimane would do with YSL (now Saint Laurent - as you probably know) and while he had a lukewarm reception for his his ss13 show, i got really excited about some of the looks, but even more so about the hats the models were sporting. I had acquired a similar hat a few months back at Topshop so obviously i took the opportunity to channel my inner Saint Laurent spirit.

What i'm wearing:
Hat - Topshop
Coat - Club Monaco
Scarf - Yoana Baraschi
Bag - Bottega Veneta

Giovanna Fashion Week

My favorite Gio look through this entire fashion month. She's always been a favorite - though not completely correlated to my own personal style. She carries everything she wears so damn well.

PS i will forever be bitter about missing out on those YSL shoes.

Kate in Mango

Kate is making me want to shop at Mango. I L O V E these looks.

Leather Looks

There's no garment material i love more than leather. Give me leather anything and i will be the happiest girl in the world. Why not give the ubiquitous pants and jacket a fresh update as demonstrated yonder by the cute-as-a-button Josephine Skriver and the pretty brunette in the slacks?

Role Model

I recently had a conversation with someone about role models and the types of people we admire, which got me thinking: who do i look up to and why? There are a handful of admirable women in my personal life that fit the bill to a tee (here's looking at you, mother!) but on the more public side of things, the pickins aren't slim either -- it just depends on who it is that touches you with what they stand for and represent. I thought i'd share one of my role models with you today cause, well, it's my blog and i can do what i want i think who you choose to look up to says a lot about who you are.

I love Gwyneth Paltrow because i think that she is an exceptional example of balance. I know the woman gets a lot of flack for her website and that she's often accused of being unrealistic and living in a ridiculous rich-person bubble while trying to come off as normal. I digress. I think she's cool, down-to earth, incredibly funny (seriously, watch her in an interview), has amazing taste, appears to have great values and follows her path without really taking the words of her critics to heart. She's not perfect and she's not pretending to be, but she is incredibly chic even if wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Beauty, brains and unpretentiousness. It also helps that she's BFFs with Mario Batali. Voilà!

The woman also just turned 40 this week and has never looked better. Here's to you, Gwinnie! Who are your role models?

PS A very happy thanksgiving to all my canadian compadres!

Pattern Play

While head-to-toe playful patterns are a bit much for me, not mention real life, they sure are a great recipe for a pretty delicious-looking pic.
