Turn Up the Volume

Turn Up the Volume by Fashion Over Reason, Photographed by Ian Rusiana in DUMBO, Brooklyn, New York City

Truth be told, I've never been a bodycon kind of gal. Through the years, I've owned a few spandex numbers, but those pieces never made it out onto the streets (not on my body, anyway) -- they always hung in my closet as fillers. The thought process behind having tight mini dresses was that every woman should be the proud owner at least one. I now scoff at this clueless supposition.

There are ladies out there who couldn't fathom the thought of wearing anything other than curve-hugging, crotch-grazing items on a night out, but personally, that scenario would be my nightmare come true. If I wasn't comfortable making public appearances in what could be described as Hervé Léger's legacy while in my heyday (that's arguable, I suppose), it only makes sense to say that I never will be.

I much prefer the volume to be turned up in the form of a structured silhouette and loose locks ran amok in the wind. Long live the potato sack dress! And bonus points if it comes in white neoprene with pockets -- you know, to give it a true boxy marshmallow paper bag look. This dress qualifies as nothing less than a fashion dress (as opposed to a bait for the opposite sex) and can therefore be paired with full confidence to impress all of your girl friends.

That's not to say that I have Amish tendencies (I mean no offense to the Amish, they are very nice people). While I don't care to reveal the fact that I might have eaten too much at lunch with a belly-caressing garment, I have no problem whatsoever in showing as much leg as I possibly can, sometimes often pushing the boundaries of appropriateness. For very obvious reasons, this dress could not exist as it does if it wasn't cut above the knee.

It's a dress that should probably be avoided during mating season, but if, like me, you just don't care about those things, strap on a pair of alluring high heels (I didn't say you had to be completely void of sex appeal) and slip into your least shape-flattering shift. Allez, hop!

I agree-don't wear anything if we're not comfortable in it. I love the loose dresses! And they don't reveal much skin which gives a sexy mystery on what's underneath ;)
Love the dress and the nude colors, you look beautiful!

I just love this look! To be honest, I've never been a fan of obvious body cons - I'd rather wear something fitted / tailored than tight. :)

I totally agree, there is something too obvious about body con mini's. I had mini dress from Betsy Johnson that was cut 60's style with at turtle neck that had zippers up the neck and oversized hoops on the ends of the pulls so that it looked like you were wearing hoop earrings. Boxy mini dress are some of faves and love the one you are wearing!

I tend to care more about fashion than sex appeal as well (Even pre-marriage!)…so I find this dress all sorts of fantastic. And I love the shoes!

I used to follow your blog a long time ago and somehow lost track of it and then just randomly stumbled upon it again tonight and I am SO glad that I did! I am lovvvving this dress and I think it takes even more confidence to rock something that's not obviously showy or sexy and look absolutely amazing in it! So happy to have found your blog again and will add it to bloglovin' immediately so I won't lose track again! ;)

A vision in white!!! I used to be all about body con but I think I'm growing up because recently I've been all about sloppy shirt-dresses (well, this one I got from H&M. As you say, it is very handy for hiding whatever fast food I just had!

Super funny post…and I'm so jealous. If I could only pull off a totally formless dress as well as you, I'd be a happy woman! And you're killing me with these Dumbo posts…have to book a NYC trip soon!
