Black Lives Matter

2020. What a year and we're just six months in. I think I've learned more in the past two weeks than I have in the past decade. The fact that it took this catalyst for me to look outside my bubble and actually pay real attention to the systemic injustices that Black people have had the burden to bear since, well, always fills me with immense regret. That I never once sought out to learn about the heart-wrenching history of America. That I haven’t been vocal about race issues in the past. That I've spent my entire life glossing over the fact that the system was designed in every way to advantage me just because of my skin color.

I've been posting relevant resources on my Instagram stories (which are all saved to a highlight if you're looking for anything) and taking this time to listen, take everything in, process information, and educate myself. To do the work behind-the-scenes, which will be an ongoing endeavor. What I've learned through this deep dive into American history is that I had my head in the sand pretty deep.

I say all this stuff about myself not to center the narrative around me, as it most certainly has nothing to do with my experience, but to bring up the importance of introspection. White people, if you're not self-reflecting, if you're not out there trying to learn, I don't know what you're waiting for. They say knowledge is power, and never have I felt more strongly about this. The week I've spent poring over podcasts, movies, interviews (literature coming soon to my mailbox) has opened my eyes to, well, everything. The more I continue to unpack, the more I realize that none of it ever occurred to me and yes, that is ultimate privilege at its peak. But to learn about the history that's culminating right before us today is to gain insight and an understanding of why it's all happening. It's also bringing about outrage.

Outrage that the system was literally designed this way. Outrage about the inhumanity with which every law from the very beginning of the very draft of the constitution has been deliberately conceived to oppress—very specifically—Black people (who never asked to be here in the first place but built the whole damn economy of the south for free). Outrage that you’ve been obliviously (or sometimes probably not obliviously) taking advantage of this societal structure (myself included) that was conceived to lift you up while bringing Black people down. You should be outraged that while doing your research, you are just now realizing that this legacy of injustice is prominently entrenched in today’s culture.

The good thing is that outrage spurs action. When you're outraged, it's nearly impossible to sit still and do nothing -- all those protests are proof of that. This is what leads to change. I implore you: educate yourself, understand the issues, rectify your behaviors accordingly. Diversify your life, diversify your environment, diversify your Instagram feed, vote with your wallet (and at the polls if you are able to, unlike myself), use your voice, stand up for injustices when you witness them. These changes will not happen overnight and the work will require a concerted effort to keep moving the needle forward, but let's all commit to doing what's right. To doing what should have been done hundreds of years ago. We can't change the past but we can shape the future, a better one, one where equality truly prevails.

___

Here are some of my personal goals moving forward, which I’m stating here for 3 reasons: to lead by example, to encourage you to do the same, and to be accountable.

- Seek out Black-owned businesses and restaurants to support and frequent
- Watch movies (at home and in theaters) with Black protagonists
- Read books by Black authors
- Stand up for racial injustice when I witness it
- Do more research on the brands I work with (in the same way I do my due diligence about sustainability and ethics) -- I am fully aware that I do not contribute in any way to diversity when I am cast in a campaign
- Keep educating myself on the history and the perspectives of those on the receiving end of injustice to deepen my knowledge and understanding and to keep my outrage (aka action) top of mind

___

And with all of that said, here is a list of helpful resources for you to continue doing the work behind-the-scenes and keep fighting the good fight.

Jenni Kayne Essentials

jenni kayne boyfriend sweater, jenni kayne woven straw bag, jenni kayne discount code, jenni kayne promo code

I'm counting down the days until we can walk about safely and and resume normal life and wear cute outfits to actually go places. I have a whole list of pieces I can't wait to parade around in... and the fact that the weather will be warm is even more exciting.

Two of those items are this perfect transitional knit, the Jenni Kane Everyday Sweater, and this giant classic woven beach bag, which is an ideal carry-all that transcends seasons (in my humble opionion), although looks particularly cute in the spring and summertime.

Remember that you can always get 20% off your order with my Jenni Kayne promo code Helene20. Plus you'll receive her beautiful book, Pacific Natural, as a gift with purchase when you spend $150 and over.

Below are some products that I love and wholeheartedly recommend.

Skincare

Cleansers:

1. Eve Lom Gel Balm Cleanser - A lovely, luxurious-feeling cleanser that's super gentle and leaves your skin feeling fresh and clear.

2. Erno Laszlo Oil Wash - A wonderful makeup-removing pre-cleanse.

3. Erno Laszlo Black Mud Bar - The most gentle dirt-sucking cleanser that will leave pores squeaky clean and skin über soft.

Mists:

1. Caudalie Beauty Elixir - it's not a cult product for nothing. Keep this at your desk, in your bag, in you medicine cabinet. It's an instant skin boost as a toner, it's the perfect makeup setting spray, and it's an instant refresher throughout the day.

2. Herbivore Rose Hybiscus Hydrating Mist - this is a really pure and lovely soothing rose mist.

3. Mario Badescu Final Spray with Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater - another great rose mist, and super quenching too with the aloe. Can't beat this price point either.

Serums:

1. Tata Harper Elixir Vitae Serum Wrinkle Solution - This is a STEEP investment, but if you have the means and are looking for a big time skincare indulgence, this is one of the most luxurious products I've ever put on my skin and it loves every second of it.

2. BeautyBio Nightly Retinol + Peptide Anti-Aging Serum - I haven't tried a BeautyBio product my skin didn't love and their retinol options are wonderful.

3. Ole Henriksen Truth Serum - An incredibly gentle and lovely vitamin C serum that will give your skin a glowy boost in the morning.

Oils:

1. The Ordinary 100% Organic Col-Pressed Rosehip Oil - I would truly recommend any product from The Ordinary, but this organic rosehip oil is particularly wonderdul. It's so soothing and hydrating, and you just can't beat the price point.

2. Josie Maran Skin Dope Argan Oil + CBD - I'm a big believer of CBD skincare and my skin adores argan oil. This gentle oil helps calm things down if you have blemish-prone skin. It's a gorgeous product.

3. The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane - Probably my favorite product from The Ordinary. It's SUPER cheap and the retinol concentration is perfect. Has helped me retain bounciness and noticeably minimized fine lines. It's a must.

Moisturizers:

1. Farmacy Better Daze Ahead CBD Moisturizer - Another CBD-infused skincare product. This moisturizer is ultra-soothing, whether you're breaking out or are looking to retain your skin's clearness. You'll wake up with nary a red post, feeling hydrated and glowy.

2. Belif True Cream Moisturizing Bomb - A wonderful thirst-quenching product that's ultra gentle. The texture is lovely and absorbs beautifully into the skin.

3. Dr. Roebucks No Worries Hydrating Face Moisturizer - This is a hyaluronic acid moisturizer and it is the bomb. You'll wake up with a glow and clear skin.

Eyes:

1. Belif Moisturizing Eye Bomb - This is a gorgeous eye cream with a beautiful texture. Great for nighttime but also layers great under makeups for the daytime.

2. Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado - This cream is RICH. I would recommend it for nighttime use only, as it's quite heavy, but will keep your under-eye area plump.

3. Supergoop Bright-Eyed 100% Mineral Eye Cream - This guy is a total game-changer in the eye category! Not only is it luminous and will make you look awake, but it's got SPF 40 so the most sensitive area of your face is protected from the rays to slow down the aging process.

Masks:

1. LaNeige Water Sleeing Mask - One of my favorites of all time. You wake up looking clear and super fresh.

2. Tata Harper Clarifying AHA + BHA Mask - Your skin will thank you for this. It'll feel so soft.

3. Keihl's Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Mask - If you've got some flare-ups, this is a great mask to help everything calm down.

1. Erno Laszlo Pore Cleansing Clay Mask - This is a super purifying exfoliating mask. One of my favorites for when i've just stepped off a plane.

2. Glow Recipe Watermelon + AHA Sleeping Mask - Wear overnight if you want glowy, bouncy skin in the morning.

3. Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask - Will suck the dirt out of your pores and leave your skin feeling like a baby's bottom.

Makeup

Face:

1. Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint - It's not just a skin tint, it's also got a bunch of skincare ingredients. Double whammy. It's actually pretty medium coverage for a tint and it's essentially glow in a bottle.

2. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer - One of my all-time favorite products. It's light coverage, just enough to cover minor imperfections but still makes your skin look like actual skin. It provides the perfect dose of glow without overdoing it, and it absorbs so beautifully you don't even feel like you've got anything on your skin.

3. It Cosmetics CC Cream - Do you want to look airbrushed without feeling cakey? Buy this and never look back.

1. Ilia True Skin Serum Concealer - Probably my favorite concealer ever. Doesn't crease AT ALL under the eyes, which is my problem area. One of the only concealers I've ever tried that I can say that about.

2. Lilah b. Divine Duo Lip & Cheek - I'm obsessed with this little pebble of pigment. It packs a big punch with only a little product and provides a fresh glow and a cute stained lip. I love a multitasking item.

3. Kevyn Aucoin - Hello GLOW! Applies so gorgeously, blends perfect and never leaves any "chunks" on the skin like some highlighters do.

1. Laura Mercier Face Illuminator - Sweep this all over your face for the most subtle flattering shimmer that will make you look like you're glowing from within.

2. Milk Makeup Holographic Stick - Another multitasking guy, which i'm obsessed with. I use this in the color Stardust on my cheeks and lips, and sometimes the eyes. The pink shade is perfect and the iridescence catches the light beautifully, giving another dimension to the finish. It's also surprisingly long-lasting.

3. Artis Brush set - These are my favorite makeup applicators. You need very little product and they give foundation an airbrushed finish, they buff in blush seamlessly, and they're wonderful for spreading eyeshadow in a way that looks like you did it with your fingers, but better.

Eyes:

1. Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerize Cream Eyeshadow - For the most sensual bedroom eyes you can every imagine.

2. Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks - These sticks are the perfect product. Not only are they multitasking (eyes, lips, cheeks), but the color options are beauts, they're super long-wearing, and incredibly versatile.

3. Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara - Not only is the formula exceptional, but there are various bristle sides on the one brush, which is a total game-changer.

Lips:

1. Armani Rouge D'Armani Matte Lipstick - Ultra long-lasting, high pigment, luxe lipsticks.

2. Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick - The formula of this lipstick is gorgeous. The finish is matte but it will never dry out your lips.

3. Sephora Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick - Probably the best bang for your buck ever. These don't come off unless you actually remove the color with something that's meant for that.

Hair

1. Virtue Recovery Shampoo - Makes hair shiny and bouncy while infusing the body with moisture.

2. Virtue Recovery Conditioner - Perfect complement to the shampoo.

3. Christophe Robin Aloe Vera Shampoo - I only have good hair days after I use this shampoo. Super hydrating if you have damaged hair.

1. Christophe Robin Aloe Vera Leave-In Hair Mist - A great detangler that won't weigh the hair down once it's dried.

2. Shu Uemura Glaze Treatment for Colored Hair - A very impactful mask for hair in need of nourishment.

3. Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Universal Balm - I love adding this to my wet har after showering to keep flyaways tame for a dose of hydration. The best part is that it doubles as a hand cream.

1. Ouai Shine Spray - Not only does this smell amazing, but it's also an instant boost for your ends. I LOVE this guy.

2. Briogeo Volume Spray - I spray this all over my roots before I let my hair air dry and it gives them a little lift instead of falling flat.

3. Verb Ghost Oil - Add this gorge oil to your ends while wet and they'll feel healthy and look shiny when dry.

1. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo - Smells delightful AND works wonders.

2. Verb Dry Shampo - Also very great with good smells.

3. IGK Dry Shampoo - Works great and adds awesome texture.

Jenni Kayne for Spring

Jenni Kayne slip skirt, Rails fruit knit sweater, adidas stan smith, alyssaxapercu, alyssainthecity apercu eyewear

As we continue to power through these tough times, engaging in a little retail therapy can sooth the soul. Especially if you're helping a small business stay afloat. While I already have a habit of shopping mostly small when normal life is happening, i've been making a particularly concerted effort to support these types of companies through this shaky period.

If that's the case for you, too, you must check out Jenni Kayne's elevated basics! As you know, I'm one of their ambassadors, and I wholeheartedly vouch for the loveliness of their pieces and the consciousness with which they operate. They've reduced their inventory for now to better serve customers through this new reality, and their beautiful clothes are perfect for cocooning inside while we social distance for the following few weeks (or months- who knows). That said, you'll also be so happy to have them for real life when it resumes.

Take for example this gorge slip skirt. It'll make you feel fancy while you're working from home but also keep you cozy and comfy. Then there's the cashmere cocoon cardigan, the epitome of casual luxury. And let's not forget about the stunning shearling slide sandals, a shoe that demands nothing less than to be worn both inside and outside. All essentials for your homebound self that will also continue to serve you beautifully once it's all over.

Use code Helene20 for 20% off your Jenni Kayne order, and as of April 1st, receive Jenni's gorgeous book, Pacific Natural, as a free gift when you spend $150 or more and use my code.

Rent the Runway Unlimited

Rent the Runway unlimited, 3.1 phillip lim, le superbe hawaiian shirt, vans checkered slip-ons, nunoo bag

Wow, what a weird time we're living in.

We're currently in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, NYC is on lockdown, and no one's got a clue as to when this will all end. While social distancing (and maybe already or soon to be shelter-in-place, depending on where you're located) is the new reality, technology's been really doing us a solid by helping us stay connected to our geographically-distant loved ones. And if there's one thing this has taught us so far is that social media can truly be used for good: people from all walks rallying to stay connected and to spread the word on how we can lend a hand to all kinds of critical situations, celebrities filming live performances or engaging their fans, influencers linking up to broadcast video chats to offer support and/or comic relief. Even if we're quarantined, it's clear that we're not alone.

All this heaviness can get us down, so let's keep our spirits up, shall we? And I think this should get our minds off the doom for a moment: the incredible service that is Rent the Runway.

I've been using their Unlimited service for about two months and I'm kicking myself for not getting on board sooner. The general belief is that Rent the Runway only services occasion wear, but that is a false assumption. They actually carry a plethora of ready-to-wear, including extremely cool contemporary brands that most of us can't afford to shop from (think Nanushka, Ganni, or Khaite). This means you can basically have a constant rotation of covetable designer pieces at a tiny fraction of the actual cost. If you really love an item, they also give you the option to buy it at a low price. It is THE BOMB.

Case in point: this entire outfit is from Rent the Runway, the top by Le Superbe and shorts by 3.1 Phillip Lim (got many compliments I almost bought em tbh).

If you wanna try the Rent the Runway Unlimited service, use my code HELENERTR to get $100 off your first month. You will have no regrets, trust. (And they've got tons of elevated comfy clothes for your work-from-home needs as this pandemic passes...)

Jenni Kayne Springtime Basics

Jenni Kayne raincoat, Jenni Kayne Cotton Fisherman knit sweater, Jenni Kayne bucket bag

Name a more classic garment than a trench coat. I'll wait.

It's a basic everyone needs in their wardrobe and here's why. It's chic and elegant but can also be dressed down, it's appropriate in either sunny or rainy weather, it looks great both oversized or tailored, plus it's a layering essential during transitional weather. The possibilities are truly limitless.

But it can become even better when there's a little twist. Exhibit A: this Jenni Kayne raincoat, which has a removable hood and a more streamlined front than a traditional trench. It strikes the perfect balance between solid and tailored as well as effortless and slouchy. It's gonna take me all the way into late spring.

The second Jenni Kayne piece I want to introduce you to is this gorgeous cotton fisherman knit, which is heavy enough to take me into spring but light enough for when it starts warming up. The cut is easy and beautiful, and it's the type of basic everyone needs in their wardrobe.

I'm also still sporting this killer Jenni Kayne bucket bag, which we were introduced to back in November, and is probably one of the pieces I get the most compliments on. It's a gorgeous everyday bag that fits a Macbook Air, need I say more.

As you know, I am a Jenni Kayne Ambassador, and know that you can always get 20% off your order with my code: Helene20
